Amazon says it will invest $50 billion to expand artificial intelligence and supercomputing for Amazon Web Services, focusing on tools designed for U.S. government agencies competing in the global AI race.

According to CNBC, the project will begin this year and add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of capacity across AWS’ most secure cloud regions, including GovCloud and classified government platforms.

Federal agencies will gain wider access to AI services aimed at building custom systems, managing massive datasets, and boosting productivity.

AWS CEO Matt Garman said the investment will “fundamentally transform” how government agencies use supercomputing, helping accelerate work in areas like cybersecurity, national defense, and drug discovery.

But the scale of the expansion has raised concerns. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, and experts warn the added demand could strain power grids, increase reliance on fossil fuels, and drive up household energy bills. Reuters notes that the new capacity alone could power roughly 750,000 homes.

Environmental groups also point out that large data centers require significant water for cooling and can put pressure on local resources. While Amazon is turning to renewable energy partnerships to offset some of the impact, critics argue that the rapid pace of data center growth is outpacing efforts to manage its environmental and economic costs.
