Macron says Ukraine now relies on France for intel

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that France has now replaced the United States as Ukraine’s primary source of intelligence support.

Speaking in his New Year address to the French military, Macron said that while Ukraine relied heavily on US intelligence a year ago, France now provides nearly two-thirds of that support. “Two-thirds,” he emphasized.

His remarks point to a shift in how Western nations are contributing to Ukraine’s war effort and suggest that Washington may have reduced the scale of its intelligence and military backing.

The change follows a brief pause in US intelligence sharing and military aid in March 2025, when the Trump administration temporarily suspended support as part of efforts to broker a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow. The suspension was lifted about a week later.
