Elon Musk has announced a major change to how Tesla will sell its Full Self-Driving feature — and it comes with a Valentine’s Day deadline.
In a post on X, the Tesla CEO said the company will stop offering FSD as a one-time purchase after February 14. From that point on, the assisted driving software will only be available through a monthly subscription.
“Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14. FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter,” Musk wrote.
At the moment, Tesla owners can choose between paying $8,000 upfront for the feature or subscribing for $99 a month. The new move removes the buy-once option entirely, pushing all customers toward a recurring payment model.
The decision comes as Tesla continues to face challenges convincing drivers to pay for the technology, despite Musk frequently calling Full Self-Driving a cornerstone of the company’s future. He has long argued that advanced autonomy will define Tesla’s next phase — from personal vehicles to robotaxis — but adoption has lagged behind expectations.
By shifting FSD to a subscription-only model, Tesla appears to be betting that a lower monthly price barrier will attract more users, while also creating a steady stream of recurring revenue as it works toward its long-term vision of self-driving cars.
