Montreal police are probing a viral holiday incident in which people dressed as Santa and elves allegedly stole about $3,000 worth of groceries from a Metro store and distributed them to people in need. The Robin Hood–style act took place on December 15 and quickly spread across social media.
A group calling itself “Robins des Ruelles” claimed responsibility, saying several Santas and around 40 masked elves entered the store and took food to redistribute to struggling residents. Some groceries were reportedly left in a public square beneath a Christmas tree with a note reading, “When hunger justifies the means,” while the rest were to be donated through food banks.
Police confirmed they are investigating a theft under $5,000 and are reviewing surveillance footage and online videos. No arrests have been made. The grocery chain condemned the act, warning that retail theft is increasing across Canada, as online debate continues over whether the stunt was charitable or criminal.
