Spotify has said it will not penalize AI-generated music, even as more subscribers complain that these tracks are starting to dominate major playlists.

Artificial intelligence is spreading across many creative fields, but its impact has been especially noticeable in music. In recent months, several AI-made artists have gained large audiences, often without listeners realizing the songs weren’t created by humans. That has frustrated both musicians and fans, many of whom are now calling on streaming platforms to limit AI tracks in their recommendations.

Users say playlists like Discover WeeklyNew Releases, and Viral 50 are increasingly filled with AI-generated songs. Some claim that a majority of their recommendations now come from artificial artists, making it harder to find real performers and new human talent.

Despite the backlash, Spotify says it does not treat AI music differently from any other content. In a statement, the company said it does not promote or penalize tracks based on whether they were created using AI tools.

At the same time, Spotify admits the issue is growing. The platform has already removed tens of millions of AI-generated tracks in recent months as part of efforts to crack down on spam and fake artists. Still, the company acknowledges that AI is becoming a permanent part of the music ecosystem.

In fact, Spotify itself is leaning further into the technology, offering premium users tools that use AI to help generate playlists — a sign that artificial intelligence isn’t leaving music anytime soon, even as the debate around it continues.
