The creator of Tetris has suggested that Rubik’s Cubes should be sent into space as a lasting symbol of human civilization, following a rare public appearance alongside the inventor of the iconic puzzle.
The idea was shared during a collaboration celebrating the launch of the Rubik’s Tetris Cube — a crossover puzzle that combines the classic Rubik’s Cube format with Tetris-style tetromino shapes. The project brought together Alexey Pajitnov and Ernő Rubik in one of their few on-camera meetings.
Unlike a standard Rubik’s Cube, the new version challenges players to assemble six different tetromino pieces instead of matching colors. Once solved, it can be displayed on a stand shaped like the long Tetris block.
Pajitnov said he was thrilled to meet Rubik, adding that the cube represents something people often underestimate. He described it as a true symbol of modern civilization and said that if he were to send objects into space as proof of humanity’s culture, the Rubik’s Cube would be among his top choices.
He compared the idea to past efforts like the Voyager Golden Records, explaining that the cube stands out because of its simplicity and universality. When asked if Tetris should be included in a similar space archive, Pajitnov said the game depends on technology to exist, while the Rubik’s Cube is a complete physical object on its own.
He also spoke about the deeper purpose of puzzles, saying their real value lies in the joy they bring rather than competition or achievement. According to Pajitnov, creating moments of happiness through puzzles is what truly matters — and that mission won’t be replaced by artificial intelligence.
The collaboration placed both legendary creators in the spotlight, with the Rubik’s Tetris Cube symbolizing the meeting of two of the world’s most influential puzzle minds.
