The US has moved to block the sale of new drones made by China’s DJI, citing national security risks.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added DJI, Autel, and other foreign-made drones and components to its “Covered List,” preventing new products from entering the US market. DJI currently dominates the sector, holding around 80% of the US consumer drone market.

The decision follows growing efforts in Washington to limit Chinese drone imports over concerns about surveillance, data security, and supply chain vulnerabilities. Existing, previously approved drones are not affected, and consumers can continue using devices they already own.

DJI said it was disappointed by the ruling, arguing that the company was not given clear information on the evidence behind the decision. Chinese officials criticized the move as discriminatory, while US officials framed it as part of a broader push to reduce reliance on foreign-made drone technology and strengthen domestic production.
