X moves Grok image tool to premium after deepfake backlash

Grok’s AI image tool on X has been restricted to paying subscribers after widespread backlash over its use in creating nonconsensual sexualized images of real people.

Elon Musk’s company xAI came under heavy criticism after users began using Grok to digitally alter photos — often of women and, in some cases, minors — by removing clothing and placing them in sexualized poses. As outrage spread, governments and regulators in the UK, EU, India, and other regions pressured X to act.

Now, when users try to request image edits through Grok on X, the tool responds that image generation is only available to subscribers. This change means most users can no longer create images with Grok on the platform, while those who can must have verified payment details on file. Non-subscribers can still access image features through Grok’s standalone app and website.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticized the move, saying it simply turns an unlawful AI feature into a paid service rather than fixing the underlying issue. Lawmakers in the US echoed similar concerns, arguing that limiting access doesn’t stop abuse — it only monetizes it.

Musk said earlier this month that anyone using Grok to create illegal content would face the same consequences as uploading illegal material directly. X also pointed to its policies banning child sexual exploitation and harmful content.

Regulators, including the UK’s media watchdog Ofcom, have since contacted X and xAI to ensure they are meeting legal obligations to protect users, while US lawmakers continue pushing for stronger laws targeting deepfake abuse.
